Spring Show Update
|
|
Throughout
the season we have brought you various updates on the spring regional
shows. The following are the most recent comments received by the
SATA staff office:
Pacific Northwest retailers upbeat at regional markets:
Rain, wind, snow flurries and even a NW tour by the Dhali Lama could
not keep retailers away from regional markets in Portland, Oregon and
Seattle, Washington. Retailers attending both trade shows to
purchase footwear, clothing and accessories were both encouraged and
positive on the future retail climate. "The northwest seems
to be more recession proof than other places in the country,"
reported one retailer. Many travelers reported that orders were
good. Even those travelers who expected not to write many orders
commented that they opened new accounts.
Metropolitan New York Shoe Market more than doubles in size:
B&STA completed its first year as an all booth shoe show at the New
Jersey Convention Center in Edison, NJ. The show has more than
doubled in size since its days as a ballroom and hotel room show at the
Hilton Hotel in East Brunswick, NJ and continues to trend the same way
in 2008, after finishing the January and March shows. The vendor base
has increased by 75% and retailer attendance increased by 50%. More
than that, the show is bringing retailers from not only the NY/NJ
Metropolitan area, but also Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Maryland,
Delaware and even as far as Florida, California and Canada! The goal
for the show is to eventually incorporate apparel and accessory vendors
in addition to men's, women's, children's and athletic footwear, to
create "one stop shopping" for the visiting retailers.
Tony Knapp, widely respected speaker, trainer, educator and motivator,
addressed the exhibitors at the start of B&STA's January 2008 Show.
This was the first seminar in a series produced by SATA.
B&STA was pleased to have been the first market to host and help
launch the seminar series. The turnout was more than expected and
all left with positive feedback and 100% approval. Look for
news in upcoming issues of SATA Online about Tony's seminar scheduled
for June 30 at SMOTA.

Soles4Souls
Creates 'National Barefoot Day' to Increase Participation in Charity's
Events
|
|
Soles4Souls, the international footwear charity based in
Nashville, has unveiled plans for a series of nationwide events to be
held June 1-7, 2008. "National Barefoot Day" will take
place on Sunday, June 1, with various events across the country
scheduled for the rest of the week, which will be known as Barefoot
Week, and will be held each year during the first week of June.
"We know that people will become engaged with our charity by
participating in our events," said Wayne Elsey, CEO and founder of
Soles4Souls. "Raising awareness is a good thing, but for
people to truly 'own' our charity, we need to give them chances to
personally participate in our mission - and Barefoot Week is designed
to do that," Elsey said.
According to Elsey, the organization is working hard to highlight the
environmental benefits of turning in shoes as opposed to throwing them
away. "A sad fact is that there are 300 million children in the
world who have never owned a pair of shoes, while the same number of
shoes were tossed into American landfills last year," he
said. "We want to give people a reason to clean out their
closets and help needy people while reducing the strain on our
landfills at the same time," Elsey said. Click here for complete
article.
*Editor's Note: Travelers, you can help get the word out to
the retailers. Let them know they can get participation details
at www.soles4souls.com.

Price Increases
Are Coming
|
|
Footwear price
increases to the consumer could easily be 5 to 20 percent in the coming
year.
What's driving these increases:
- Steep increases in the
costs of raw material, labor, ocean freight, and transportation
- Skyrocketing petroleum
increases
- The weak dollar
- New labor policies in
China with increased competition for workers.
While
most experts say the impact of pricing pressures wouldn't be felt until
Spring '09, some are already feeling the sting.
Jim Issler, president and CEO of HH Brown said the footwear industry is
entering a new era. "We chased labor around the world.
Now, we're at the end of the maze and there is nowhere else to
go."
Most industry leaders say you can't escape it by going to India or
other places as these locations have many challenges in productivity,
infrastructure, etc.
Another industry person summed it up by saying that pricing pressures
aren't going away, and the end result may be higher costs for everyone
-- and consumers and companies are simply going to have to adjust.

Online Sales
Growth
|
|
Although
online retail sales growth in the U.S. is slowing, sales (excluding
travel) are still expected to rise 17 percent this year.
The industry has enjoyed explosive growth - 44% increase
in sales in 2001 - as more customers have started using broadband
internet access and embraced online shopping. Decelerating growth
is expected, as the internet reaches a point of saturation. Shop.org
spokeswoman Ellen Davis said that online retail sales will eventually
fall to single-digit growth, even as their share of the total retail
pie increases.
Apparel is expected to be the largest sales category in 2008, reaping
an expected $26.6 billion, followed by computers, and autos.
"With the U.S. economy struggling, it's interesting to see that
online retail is taking on a larger share of the retail industry,"
Davis said.
Online sales growth is expected to slow over the next five years as the
channel matures and there are fewer first-time users.
