SATA Board Election Results

electionresultsAfter reporting in the previous issue that the SATA Board elections are complete, a few members questioned the low participation of 13%.  Past reports stating that the industry average for association elections is around 10% actually have SATA ahead of the average.  Executive Director Shelley Shannon noted that "As we listen and act on members' comments on how to further improve the election process, we hope to have an even greater response next year."

Three incumbents and one newcomer make up the four Board members elected to three year terms during the recent election.  Jim Sheridan, Jim Newman and Gina Berman are the incumbents; Michael Sullivan is the new Board member that was elected.  They will take office at the fall Board meeting which will be held beginning November 2, 2007.  Also, at that meeting, the officers for the coming year will be elected.

Jim Newman and Michael Sullivan were elected to represent the Central Region, Gina Berman was elected for the Western Region, and Jim Sheridan was elected for the Eastern Region.

We are also pleased to announce the addition of the following members to SATA committees:

Benefit & Services Committee
Steve Wilson

Membership and Marketing Committee
Michael Kahl
Trae Smith

Education Committee
Trae Smith

In announcing the election results and additions to SATA committees, Gary Morgan, president of SATA stated, "It is with great pleasure that the Board welcomes both the incumbents and the newly elected Board member.  Their commitment to represent the best interests of the members who have elected them will be sincerely appreciated.  They will be working hard - but I can assure them that the opportunity to help shape SATA's future brings great satisfaction."

If you are interested in running as a candidate in the future, or would like to serve on a committee now, please contact the SATA staff office at

Show News

SATA at the WSA Show

SATAatWSA08While at WSA, SATA staff met with over 200 Association members and prospects via the kiosk in the South Hall or during walks of the show floor.  "Every day I hear more and more favorable comments on how SATA has been able to help the traveler, whether by the benefits we currently have, assistance in getting the member a job, or general assistance because a member does not know where to go to get a problem handled," stated Shelley Shannon. "SATA staff believe that we are here to give the members the best services they've ever received.  Our members are a wonderful group of professionals, and we enjoy working with them and look forward to continuing to help the Board grow the organization."

Shannon and Board members noted that although it has been many months since the name change, they still heard confusion during and after the WSA Show about the show and its relationship to SATA.  "Many people still think that WSA and SATA are related in some way, but we aren't," said Gina Berman, Past President of SATA.  "We hope our members will help us get the word out that there are no ties between the two organizations.  SATA is an organization of travelers and completely independent of the WSA Show."

Analysts See Long Wait to Recovery

Participants at a New York Society of Security Analysts presentation on "Market Forecast: The Times They Have-a-Changed," held at its offices last week, discussed the direction of the economy. The main conclusion: The U.S. isn't heading back into a bull market any time soon -- there's a chance the economic recovery could be delayed until well into 2010.

Martin Fridson, CEO of Fridson Investment Advisors, said there was a chance of a long recession, due in part to the elimination of many restrictive covenants in loan agreements, which had the effect of delaying defaults. Those delays, helped in part by payment-in-kind agreements where firms that can't pay cash pay with goods or services instead, could push the peak of defaults into the first half of 2010.

Neiman Marcus Moving Ahead with Expansion Plans

NeimanMarcusIn an exclusive interview with Footwear News, Neiman Marcus Group CEO Burton Tansky said that they are going ahead with expansion plans.  The firm will open five or six new Neiman Marcus stores over the next three years, and plans to begin two more major remodels in fiscal 2009, as well as a number of minor ones.

However, Neiman Marcus Group tightened fall inventory levels at its stores due to the tough economy.  Still, Tansky told investors, the retailer is sticking to its strong merchandising and customer service strategy and has no plans to start cutting prices.
